Bone Broth for Dogs
If you’re constantly searching for ways to improve your dog’s health naturally, you’ve probably come across bone broth more than once.
Bone Broth for dogs, has become one of the most talked-about additions to a dog’s diet and for good reason.
Many dog owners find themselves dealing with recurring digestive issues, itchy skin, stiff joints, poor mobility, fussy eating habits or simply a feeling that their dog could be thriving rather than just getting by.
While there is rarely a single food that solves every problem, bone broth for dogs is one of the simplest and most nourishing additions you can make to their bowl.
Rich in collagen, amino acids, minerals and naturally occurring compounds that support the body, bone broth for dogs has earned its reputation as a canine superfood.
Whether you are supporting a senior dog, helping recovery after illness, or simply looking to strengthen your dog’s overall wellbeing, bone broth for dogs can be a valuable part of a balanced diet.
Why Bone Broth for Dogs is Good
Supports Joint Health and Mobility
As dogs age, it is common to notice subtle changes in their movement, perhaps they take a little longer to get up in the morning, hesitate before jumping into the car, or seem less enthusiastic on walks than they once were.
Bone broth for dogs is naturally rich in collagen, which breaks down into gelatine during the cooking process.
These compounds help support healthy cartilage, while naturally occurring glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid contribute to joint lubrication and comfort.
For older dogs, active dogs and breeds that are prone to joint problems, regularly adding bone broth to meals may help support mobility and long-term joint health.
Promotes Digestive Health
Digestive issues are one of the most common concerns dog owners face.
Loose stools, sensitive stomachs, excessive wind and recurring digestive discomfort can leave owners feeling frustrated and unsure where to turn next.
The gelatine found in bone broth helps support the lining of the digestive tract, making it a gentle addition for dogs with sensitive digestion.
A healthy digestive system is essential for absorbing nutrients effectively, which impacts everything from energy levels to immune function.
Many owners are surprised to discover that digestive health often sits at the centre of wider wellbeing challenges.
When the gut is supported properly, improvements can sometimes be seen in areas that initially seem unrelated.
Supports a Healthy Immune System
A strong immune system is essential for helping your dog cope with everyday challenges.
Bone broth for dogs contains naturally occurring minerals including calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, all of which play important roles within the body.
It also contains glycine, an amino acid that supports cellular function and overall health.
While no single food can prevent illness, providing nutrient-dense foods helps create the foundations for a healthier, more resilient dog.
Supports the Liver’s Natural Detoxification Processes
Every day your dog’s liver works tirelessly behind the scenes, processing waste products and filtering substances from the body.
Glycine, one of the key amino acids found in bone broth for dogs, helps support the liver’s natural detoxification pathways.
This makes bone broth a useful addition to a fresh, balanced diet designed to support overall wellbeing.
Helps Maintain Healthy Skin and a Glossy Coat
Skin and coat condition often provide important clues about what’s happening internally.
If your dog struggles with dry skin, excessive shedding or a lacklustre coat, nutritional support can make a significant difference.
The collagen and nutrients found in bone broth for dogs, help support healthy skin structure, which may contribute to a shinier coat and healthier skin over time.
A Nutritious, Low-Calorie Addition to Meals
For dogs that need to lose weight, finding healthy additions to meals can sometimes feel challenging.
Bone broth for dogs is naturally low in calories while being packed with flavour, making it an excellent way to add interest to food without adding unnecessary calories. It can also be useful for encouraging hydration and making meals more appealing for picky eaters.
How to Serve Bone Broth to Your Dog
When introducing bone broth for the first time, it is always sensible to start with small amounts and gradually increase as your dog adjusts.
As a general guide:
- Small dogs can start with 1-2 tablespoons.
- Larger dogs can start with 2-4 tablespoons.
Bone broth can be poured over food, served on its own or frozen into treats for warmer weather.
Store fresh bone broth in the refrigerator for up to five days or freeze portions for longer-term storage.

- Strain the broth to remove bones.
- Mash all the ingredients together or blend to make a smooth liquid.
- Allow the broth to cool completely before serving.
Freeze any remaining bone broth for future use or pour into ice cube trays to create convenient treats.
As a guide, this recipe provided approximately three weeks’ worth of twice-daily feeding for a working Cocker Spaniel and stored well in the freezer.
Looking Beyond Supplements
Bone broth can be a fantastic addition to your dog’s diet, but it is important to remember that lasting health improvements rarely come from a single supplement alone.
Many of the dogs we work with are already receiving good-quality food and beneficial additions such as bone broth, yet their owners are still searching for answers around recurring skin problems, digestive issues, behaviour changes, allergies or low energy.
That is often where a more holistic approach becomes valuable.
