Six Natural Dewormers for Dogs

Keeping your dog healthy means more than feeding them nutritious food, it includes preventing and treating common issues like worms.

While conventional deworming medications can be effective, many dogs struggle with these so owners are looking for natural alternatives.

Several foods and herbs have properties that help expel intestinal worms and improve your dog’s overall gut health.

This Blog aims to provide you with all the information you need.

1. Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds can be a powerful, natural dewormer for dogs.

They contain an amino acid called cucurbitacin, which has anti-parasitic properties.

Cucurbitacin works by paralyzing worms, making it easier for your dog to expel them through the digestive tract.

How to Use:

  • Grind raw, organic pumpkin seeds into a fine powder.
  • Add about 1 teaspoon per 4kg of your dog’s body weight to their food.
  • Use daily for up to a week.

Pumpkin seeds are safe, tasty, and packed with nutrients, making them a great addition to your dog’s diet.

2. Carrots

Carrots are a simple and effective natural dewormer due to their fibrous texture.

When eaten, the coarse fibres gently scrape the intestinal walls, helping to dislodge worms and expel them from the body.

How to Use:

  • Grate raw carrots and mix them into your dog’s meals.
  • Offer as a crunchy snack or treat.

Besides helping with worms, carrots are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that support overall health.

3. Turmeric

Known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic properties, turmeric can help eliminate worms while also promoting healing in the digestive tract.

The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, has been studied for its wide range of health benefits.

How to Use:

  • Add a small pinch of turmeric powder to your dog’s food.
  • For better absorption, mix the turmeric with a little black pepper and healthy fat (like coconut oil).
  • Use about 1/8 teaspoon per 4kgs of body weight daily.

Turmeric not only helps fight worms but also reduces inflammation and boosts the immune system.

4. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil contains lauric acid, a compound with antimicrobial and anti-parasitic properties.

It helps create an environment that is less hospitable to worms while improving overall gut health.

How to Use:

  • Add 1 teaspoon per 4kgs of body weight to your dog’s food.
  • Start with smaller amounts to avoid digestive upset and gradually increase.

Coconut oil is a great supplement for dogs, as it also promotes healthy skin and a shiny coat.

5. Garlic (fresh and in small amounts)

Garlic, when used correctly, can be a powerful natural dewormer.

It contains allicin, a compound known for its antimicrobial and anti-parasitic effects.

It is important to use fresh garlic in very small amounts, as too much can be harmful to dogs.

How to Use:

  • Finely chop or crush a small piece of garlic and let it sit for 10 minutes to activate the allicin.
  • Mix about 1/4 clove for small dogs or up to 1 clove for large dogs into their food.
  • Use once daily for a week, then take a break.

Always consult your vet before using garlic, especially if your dog has existing health conditions.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) helps by altering the pH of your dog’s digestive system, making it less hospitable for worms. In addition, it can improve overall digestion and boost immune function.

How to Use:

  • Add 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar to your dog’s water or food daily.
  • Adjust the amount based on your dog’s size and weight.

Make sure to use raw, organic apple cider vinegar for best results.
