Challenges: Separation anxiety, destructive behaviour, escape attempts
Meet Bob
Bob was rescued at just eight weeks old.
A fluffy, affectionate puppy with huge paws, soft eyes and a heart full of love.
From the very beginning, he formed an incredibly close bond with the teenage daughter in his family. They were inseparable, walks together, cuddles on the sofa, familiar routines and constant companionship became Bob’s entire world.
But then life changed.
University started, anew part-time job followed and suddenly, the person Bob relied on most was gone for long periods of time and he simply did not understand why.
That was when the problems began.
The Reality of Dog Separation Anxiety
Bob started showing clear signs of separation anxiety and emotional distress.
He became destructive around the home, stopped eating properly and began escaping whenever doors or gates were accidentally left open.
Holidays became especially stressful because Bob would desperately try to run away from kennels or unfamiliar environments in search of safety and familiarity.
His family felt exhausted, overwhelmed and heartbroken.
Like many anxious dogs, Bob quickly became labelled as “naughty” or difficult.
Bob was never a bad dog, he was anxious, emotionally overwhelmed and struggling to cope with a world that suddenly felt unpredictable and unsafe.
This is something I see often inside the Happy Dog Reset, The Happy Dog Reset – The Dog Witch | Natural & Holistic Dog Care
Many dogs displaying behavioural problems are actually struggling with stress, nervous system dysregulation, poor emotional resilience or unmet wellbeing needs.
The behaviour is the symptom — not the root problem.
How the Happy Dog Reset Helped Bob
When I first met Bob, he was living in a constant state of stress and hypervigilance.
Underneath the separation anxiety was an incredibly sensitive, loving dog who simply needed support that helped him feel safe again.
Inside the Happy Dog Reset, we approached Bob’s behaviour holistically by supporting his emotional wellbeing, nervous system, environment and daily routines.
No harsh training.
No punishment.
No unrealistic expectations.
Just practical, compassionate support tailored specifically to Bob.
Creating Emotional Safety and Calm
Calming Sound Therapy
Bob responded beautifully to sound because his favourite human used to sing to him regularly.
We introduced calming music and sound therapy during periods when he was left alone to help regulate his nervous system and reduce feelings of panic and overstimulation.
A Safe Space to Decompress
We created a calm den area filled with soft blankets, familiar scents and comforting items of clothing belonging to his family.
This gave Bob a predictable, safe environment where he could relax and self-soothe when feeling anxious.
Natural Holistic Support
We also introduced gentle holistic wellbeing support to help create a calmer atmosphere within the home and encourage emotional regulation during stressful periods.
Canine Massage and Nervous System Support
Touch became a huge part of Bob’s healing journey.
I taught his family simple dog massage techniques they could use daily to help calm his body, strengthen connection and support relaxation. Healing Dog Massage Course – The Dog Witch | Natural & Holistic Dog Care
Over time, these calming rituals helped Bob learn how to settle himself more easily instead of remaining trapped in a constant stress response.
Enrichment and Emotional Balance
Because Bob’s granny often cared for him during holidays but struggled with mobility due to arthritis, we introduced gentle enrichment activities and calming games they could enjoy together at home.
This helped reduce frustration, build confidence and provide healthy mental stimulation without overwhelming him physically.
Bob’s Transformation
The changes were not instant but they were life-changing.
Bob slowly began to feel safer.
The destructive behaviour stopped.
The escape attempts disappeared.
He became calmer, more settled and far more emotionally balanced, even when left with other family members.
Most importantly, Bob no longer lives in constant panic when his humans leave the house.
He understands that he is safe and he trusts that the people he loves always come back.
There Is Hope for Anxious Dogs
Many owners feel trapped when living with an anxious or reactive dog. Separation anxiety can feel particularly exhausting when trying to manage destructive behaviour, stress and emotional overwhelm every single day.
Dogs like Bob are proof that behaviour can change when we stop focusing only on control and start supporting the whole dog instead.
Inside the Happy Dog Reset, I help dog owners better understand the root causes behind anxiety/ separation anxiety, behavioural struggles and emotional imbalance using a holistic approach that supports all six pillars of canine wellbeing:
nutrition, exercise, environment, sleep, health and wellbeing, and behaviour.
Anxious dogs do not need punishment, especially those suffering from separation anxiety, they need support, understanding and practical tools that help them finally feel safe again.
If your dog is struggling with anxiety/ separation anxiety, destructive behaviour or emotional overwhelm, you do not have to figure it all out alone.
