Palacerigg Country Park

Finding new places to go for an adventure with your dog can be tricky, that’s why The Dog Witch Dog Days Out Blog series aims to provide you with already tried and tested ideas.

This time round, we are at Palacerigg Country Park

Nestled in the heart of North Lanarkshire, Palacerigg Country Park in Cumbernauld is a hidden gem that combines nature, wildlife, and outdoor fun.

Spanning over 300 hectares, this park was established in the 1970s to promote conservation and environmental education.

It has since grown into a beloved spot for families, hikers, and dog walkers alike.

Palacerigg Country Park offers an excellent network of walking trails, catering to everyone from leisurely walkers to seasoned hikers.

The trail leading from the main car park, along the side of the golf course to Glencryan is perfect for a Dog Adventure.

The route itself is roughly 3 miles in total and loops straight back to the car park.

What to Expect

The route along the main path provides the perfect balance of nature and fantastic scenery, although if you are looking for a bit more of an adventure, there are plenty of trails leading into the woods, where curious dogs can explore.

Please be mindful that there are no bins along this trail, so carry any waste back to the car park where you will find bins there.

Facilities

Sadly the visitor’s centre and children’s petting farm are now closed, however the Golf Club, which is located just down from the main car park has toilets, which may be used at their discretion.

There is a large adventure playground and smaller play park if you are also going with children.

Finally, there are picnic benches located throughout the park, if you wanted to stop with your dog and have lunch.

Top Tips

  • Some trails can be uneven or muddy, so sturdy shoes or hiking boots are recommended.
  • Remember to carry any waste back to the bins.
  • Pack water and snacks for both you and your dog to stop and enjoy the scenery.

Conclusion

All in all, Palacerigg offers a great spot for a doggy adventure.

Each season brings new experiences. Spring and summer are lush and green, while autumn offers stunning foliage. In winter, the park has a quiet, peaceful atmosphere, so it’s the perfect spot all year round.
