In this Blog we review the recent Dog Days Out Adventure at Mugdock Country Park as we know that finding new places to explore with your dog can be tricky.

Here at The Dog Witch, we aim to provide you with fantastic tried and tested days out ideas that you and your dog can enjoy.

Exploring Mugdock Country Park

If you’re looking for a perfect blend of history, nature, and tranquillity, a visit to Mugdock Country Park should be at the top of the list.

Located just north of Glasgow, this park offers a variety of trails and historical sites that make for an unforgettable day out.

Starting Point: Visitor Centre

The adventure begins at the Mugdock Country Park Visitor Centre. This is not just a starting point but also a great place to gather information, grab a map, and perhaps enjoy a quick snack before heading out.

The centre is well-equipped with facilities and knowledgeable staff to help make the most of the visit.

First Destination: Craigend Castle

From the Visitor Centre, follow the well-marked path heading north towards Craigend Castle. This path winds through a beautiful wooded area, offering a serene introduction to the park’s natural beauty.

After a short walk, walkers will arrive at the ruins of Craigend Castle.

This once-grand estate now stands as a fascinating historical site.

Take time to explore the ruins and imagine what life might have been like during its heyday.

The castle’s remains, surrounded by lush greenery, provide plenty of photo opportunities and a glimpse into the past.

Mugdock Castle

Continuing from Craigend Castle, head east towards Mugdock Castle.

The path between these two historical sites is equally enchanting, leading through more of the park’s scenic woodland and open areas.

It’s a lovely walk that offers both shade and sunshine, making it perfect for any time of year.

Mugdock Castle, another gem of the park, awaits exploration.

This castle has a rich history dating back to the 14th century and provides a captivating look into Scotland’s medieval past.

Wander through the ruins, learn about its past, and enjoy the views from the historic vantage point.

Return Route: Mugdock Loch

From Mugdock Castle, set off on the path heading south towards Mugdock Loch.

This part of the route takes walkers through more wooded areas and picturesque fields, offering a variety of landscapes to enjoy.

Mugdock Loch is a highlight of the park, with its calm waters and abundant wildlife.

Take a leisurely walk around the loch, enjoying the peaceful ambiance and perhaps spotting some of the local birdlife.

There are several paths that circle the loch, each providing unique perspectives and beautiful views.

Return to the Visitor Centre

After soaking in the tranquillity of Mugdock Loch, it’s time to head back, follow the signs leading back to the Visitor Centre, completing the loop.

This final stretch of the walk is a pleasant conclusion to this adventure.

Conclusions

This route through Mugdock Country Park offers a perfect combination of historical exploration, scenic woodland paths, and peaceful loch-side walking.

It’s an ideal day out for history buffs, nature lovers, and anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

It is also literally doggy heaven; most areas of the park are dog friendly.

There are dog waste bins located around the park and well-behaved dogs can be off lead, just be sure to adhere to the rules of the countryside.

The route followed, took just over and hour and came in at just under 3 miles.
