Getting Started

There is some parking at the foot of the hill, just on Crow Road, however it is limited, so best to park at the car park just before you come to the entrance of the hill and walk along from there.

There are signs which lead you through a gate and to the start of the climb.

Be mindful of the road and local wildlife, so best to keep your dog on lead at these areas.

Well behaved/ controlled dogs can be off lead for the ascent.

The Climb

As you go through the gate and start your ascent, the path becomes steeper but remains manageable, winding its way uphill through grassy and sometimes boggy patches.

Keep an eye out for the vibrant hues of heather and wildflowers, especially in late summer.

This initial section also offers the first glimpses of the expansive views to come, with rolling hills stretching out around you.

Approaching the Summit

The final stretch of the climb is marked by a more exposed landscape.

The summit itself is unmarked, but you’ll know you’ve reached it when you see the white domed weather radar station nearby.

Take a moment to soak in the incredible 360degree views ,on clear days you can spot landmarks like Ben Lomond, the Trossachs, and even the outskirts of Glasgow.

Weather Radar Station

At the summit of Holehead Hill, you’ll find a striking weather radar station, part of the UK Met Office’s monitoring network.

The radar’s distinctive white dome sometimes nicknamed the “golf ball” houses advanced equipment used to track precipitation and weather patterns across Scotland.

It’s a fascinating feature that highlights the intersection of nature and technology in this remote spot.

Timing of the Climb

The climb up and down Holehead Hill typically takes around 1.5- 2 hours to complete, depending on your pace and the time spent exploring along the way.

The trail is moderate in difficulty, making it suitable for most hikers and dogs with a reasonable level of fitness

Practical Tips for Your Hike

  • Weather: The Campsie Fells are known for unpredictable weather, so it’s essential to dress in layers and carry waterproof clothing. Even on sunny days, the wind at the summit can be brisk.
  • Footwear: Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are recommended, especially given the potentially boggy sections on the moorland.
  • Navigation: While the path is generally easy to follow, mist can roll in quickly, obscuring visibility. Bring a map or GPS device to stay on track.
  • Refreshments: there are no facilities along the way so bring everything you and your dog will need for an enjoyable day out. Please also remember to take all rubbish home with you.

Conclusion

Climbing Holehead Hill is an unforgettable experience to enjoy with your dog.

It offers a combination of natural beauty, wildlife, and a touch of modern science, which is sure to get any tail wagging!
