Canine Vestibular Disease – We Thought We Were About to Lose Him

One moment Ziggy was happily pottering around the house as normal.

The next, he could barely stand.

At 12 years old, this gentle, sweet-natured Lurcher was suddenly hit by Canine Vestibular Disease, often known as “old dog syndrome.”

His balance disappeared, his legs no longer seemed to work properly, his head spun constantly, he struggled to walk, eat and even go to the toilet without support.

For his family, it was terrifying.

The dog they knew so well suddenly seemed frightened, confused and trapped inside a body he could no longer control.

After veterinary treatment brought little improvement, they were given heartbreaking advice:
prepare for the worst.

When your dog suddenly declines, especially later in life, it can feel like there are no real options left beyond simply watching and waiting.

Ziggy’s family were not ready to give up on him.

That was when they found the Happy Dog Reset, https://thedogwitch.co.uk/the-happy-dog-reset/

Looking Beyond the Symptoms of Canine Vestibular Disease

Inside the Happy Dog Reset, the focus is never just on the diagnosis, because dogs are not just symptoms.

They are nervous systems, emotions, routines, habits, nutrition, sleep, stress levels, environment and connection.

When Ziggy’s family reached out, the goal was not to push recovery, it was to support his whole body gently and naturally so he could feel safe, calm and supported enough to begin healing from Canine Vestibular Disease.

Instead of remaining in a stressful clinical environment, Ziggy was brought home where he was surrounded by familiar smells, comfort and the people who loved him most.

That alone changed everything.

Ziggy’s Happy Dog Reset Plan

Supporting Canine Vestibular Disease Recovery Through Nutrition

When dogs are unwell, nutrition matters more than ever.

Ziggy’s meals were adjusted to focus on fresh, nourishing foods that were easier on his body while supporting his immune system, nervous system and overall wellbeing.

Simple changes in nutrition can often help senior dogs regain strength, improve energy levels and better support recovery during periods of stress and inflammation.

Inside the Happy Dog Reset, nutrition is one of the six key pillars we focus on because what goes into your dog’s bowl can have a huge impact on how they feel physically and emotionally.

Calming the Nervous System

Dogs with canine vestibular disease are often extremely anxious because their world suddenly feels unstable and frightening.

Ziggy needed more than physical support, he needed help feeling emotionally safe again.

Gentle calming support was introduced to reduce stress within the home and help his nervous system move out of survival mode.

When the nervous system feels safer, the body often responds differently too.

Massage, Comfort and Emotional Reassurance

Regular canine massage became an important part of Ziggy’s recovery journey. https://thedogwitch.co.uk/healing-dog-massage-course/

Massage helped release physical tension, improve comfort and encourage relaxation while also giving Ziggy reassuring moments of calm connection with his family.

For many senior dogs, touch becomes incredibly powerful during illness and recovery, it reminds them they are safe, supported and not alone.

Ziggy’s Transformation

Within just 24 hours, Ziggy showed signs of improvement, he managed to walk with support, made his own way into the garden, he started eating more comfortably and finally seemed able to relax.

By 48 hours, his mobility had improved dramatically, his tail wagged again, his personality started returning and he showed interest in life around him instead of seeming frightened by it.

Over the following weeks, Ziggy continued growing stronger.

One month later, he was back to enjoying life again.

The slight head tilt remained, but his confidence, spark and happiness had returned completely.

His family no longer felt like they were simply waiting to lose him, they had their boy back.

Why the Happy Dog Reset Matters

One of the hardest parts of caring for an unwell or ageing dog is feeling helpless.

Most owners are handed symptom management advice but are never shown how to support the whole dog – physically, emotionally and environmentally.

That is exactly why I created the Happy Dog Reset.

Inside the Happy Dog Reset, I help dog owners better understand the root causes behind their dog’s struggles and show them practical, holistic ways to support recovery, behaviour, emotional wellbeing and quality of life naturally.

Mostly medication and management is not enough on it’s own, dogs often need: better nutrition, better rest, less stress, more emotional safety, nervous system support, and an environment that helps the body heal instead of staying stuck in survival mode.

Ziggy’s story is proof that even when things feel frightening and uncertain, there is often still so much we can do to help dogs feel better, calmer and more supported.

If your dog is struggling with canine vestibular disease, anxiety, mobility changes or senior dog health challenges, you do not have to navigate it alone.
