Finding new places to go on adventures with your dog can sometimes be tricky, so you find yourself sticking to the usual routes.
Exploring new places, however, is great for your dog’s mental health as well as their physical wellbeing.
The Dog Witch, Dog Days Out series aims to provide you with already tried and tested adventure ideas to go on with your dog, so you have the lowdown on what to expect before you head out.
During this adventure, we are at Burncrooks Reservoir in the Kilpatrick Hills.
Getting there
Nestled in the beautiful countryside near Glasgow, the walk from Edenmill Farm to Burncrooks Reservoir is a hidden gem – check the farm website for directions)
Edenmill Farm, located in Blanefield, serves as the ideal starting point for this adventure.
With ample parking, a cozy café, a farm shop, and toilet facilities, it’s a welcoming spot to begin your journey.
The car park is usually free, but it’s worth arriving early, especially at weekends, as it can get busy.
The Route
This adventure is a 10km loop, so 3-4 hours is advised.
From the car park, a well-marked trail leads you into the heart of the countryside.
Head North and follow the path until you come to the Woodshed, here turn left and follow round to the right,
The path begins with gentle slopes and meanders through patches of woodland and open fields, offering plenty of opportunities to soak in the natural beauty.
The route intersects with the iconic West Highland Way, a famous long-distance trail, adding an extra layer of charm and history to this adventure.
Keep walking until you come to the Forestry Commission sign for the Kilpatrick Hills, here turn left and go through the gate, be careful to avoid the cattle grid with your dog.
From here follow the signposts for the reservoir.
Reaching Burncrooks Reservoir
After around 2–3 miles you’ll arrive at Burncrooks Reservoir.
On a clear day the scenery is breath taking and dogs will appreciate a dip in the water.
It is also a good spot to stop for a picnic and photos.
The walk continues as a loop around the reservoir itself and leads back to the main path, taking you back to the car park at Edenmill.
For those looking to extend their adventure, paths around the reservoir allow for further exploration.
These trails offer panoramic views and are perfect for wildlife spotting—keep an eye out for deer, birds, and maybe even an elusive otter, just be mindful to keep inquisitive dogs on lead if you do spot any wildlife
Terrain and accessibility
The path is well-maintained, mostly consisting of gravel and compacted dirt, making it accessible for walkers of all levels.
Sturdy footwear is recommended.
This walk is family-friendly and dog-friendly, making it a perfect day out for everyone.
There are no bins along the route, so be mindful to take all rubbish and dog waste back with you.
Bins are located just at the rear side of the car park.
Before You Go
Check the Weather – The route is relatively exposed, so dress for the conditions
Be safe – Whilst the trail is straightforward, having a map or a GPS app on hand can ensure you stay on course.
Post Walk Treats
Sadly, the café at Edenmill is not dog friendly, however, St Moch just a few minutes’ drive down the road, is super dog friendly.
It has a range of delicious drinks and food as well as toilet facilities
